Pak Khawateen Painting Club: Glacial Movements and the Ghaib (Unseen)

On the third expedition, the Pak Khawateen Painting Club, in collaboration with Lumen Studios, UK investigated the root of the water that sustain the lifeforce rivers of the land – the Glaciers of the Karakorum. Building upon the research from the previous two expeditions investigating the politics of water and its impact on the lower agrarian lands, the two collaborative members joined strengths to work with the indigenous communities and study the impact of climate change, tourism, and migration on the glacial area.

Referred to as the ‘Third Pole’, the mountain ranges of the Karakorum, Hindukush, and Himalayas are home to some of the largest ice reserves of the world and the source to many major South Asian rivers. In contrast to the agrarian communities based in the plains to the south, whose livelihoods are tied to the harvest of their crops, the mountain settlements of the north have served as a haven for those who sought refuge from the repressive rules of states. Formed as self-sustaining communities, under glaciers that have dually served as a source of sustenance to their agriculture and a barrier against foes, these communities have long thrived in the northern lands by supporting each other while maintaining their autonomy. Studying four of the glaciers in the Hunza region – Shishper, Passu, Ghulkin, and Batura – the collectives lived with the mountain communities to understand their way of living in a time when the shape of the world is being changed.

This project was produced as part of the British Council’s Pakistan-UK New Perspectives 2022 grant, as an initiative to foster interdisciplinary and cross-cultural collaborations on the 75th anniversary of Pakistan’s independence. The work was produced in the form of an online archive accompanied by physical documentation, exhibited in cities across Pakistan and UK to foster dialogue on politics of water, glacial melt, and finding solutions through indigenous knowledge.
